After the storm - Children's book - Hélène Romano and Adolie Day - Editions courtes et longues, 2016
A child's life and family are turned upside down by a terrorist attack. The child senses that something terrible has happened, so much so that his loved ones are overwhelmed by grief and worry, but he wonders and feels guilty for lack of explanations from his parents, who are powerless to cope with the magnitude of the event. However, the child understands much more than the parents imagine, and the words finally put into words help to calm the situation. In the run-up to the trial of the Nice bombing, in which so many children were involved, this children's book, for ages 4 to 12, is the perfect way to talk about the event as a family. It's a simple, reassuring starting point for a dialogue that may be revived in the coming months. The four-color illustrations and words chosen by the author, a psychopathologist specializing in child trauma, allow us to address everyone's anxieties and emotions gently but clearly. In addition, a double-page spread lets children draw their feelings directly onto the album. An information sheet for parents provides keys to understanding the situation and encouraging family dialogue. A soothing book to read with children involved in an attack, but also with others, exposed through current events. The album could also be used by teachers in schools.
