The tree and the moon's shadow - Children's book - Hélène Romano and Adolie Day - Editions courtes et longues, 2017
L'arbre et l'ombre de la lune tackles the difficult question of a parent's suicide. Death is a heavy ordeal for a child, but even more so when the death is by suicide. The distraught child faces the abyss of silence. They may feel angry, sad, powerless or ashamed. They may also feel responsible, guilty and even unworthy of love.
This book, written by child trauma psychologist Hélène Romano and accompanied by Adolie Day's clear, warmly colored illustrations, is an invaluable tool for tackling a parent's suicide with serenity and depth.
Speech is vital in caring for a child, so this book is a genuine support for communication and co-construction between parent and child. The double-page spread allows young readers to draw their own emotions and thoughts about the story. A sheet for the family is also included, to help them better understand the child's feelings, and to provide essential reference points and guidelines for announcing the death.
