Tant pis pour l'amour - Graphic novel - Sophie Lambda - Delcourt, 2019
Sophie falls head over heels in love with Marcus. He's handsome, funny and caring. The honeymoon begins auspiciously. But it soon becomes a roller-coaster ride. The adorable lover reveals another face, much darker and more disturbing. Sophie is in Marcus' thrall. Coercive control is in place. In this comic strip, the author recounts how she suffered domestic violence and how she was able to escape. It starts out as a romantic comedy, but soon Marcus is blowing hot and cold. Treacherous remarks, episodes of jealousy and violent accusations alternate with sweet, loving moments. Sophie finds herself wavering: she doubts herself, she's disoriented, she's a shadow. She gradually loses her footing, isolated in a new town where she has moved to join Marcus. The author tells the story of her descent into the underworld and her recovery, thanks in particular to the sisterhood of other women, victims like herself, who surround her. This is an easy-to-read comic that effectively explains the mechanisms of domination to a wide audience, and fortunately for the author, it ends fairly quickly. A useful book at a time when, in France, one in 5 young women under the age of 25 claims to have been a victim of domestic violence.
