Les Nageuses is a poignant dramatic film directed by Sally El Hosaini, based on the true story of sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini, two Syrian swimmers forced to flee the civil war in 2015. Their journey takes them from Damascus to the Greek island of Lesbos, where, after their boat breaks down, they swim for hours to save around 20 passengers. The film follows their harrowing crossing to Germany, where Yusra pursues her Olympic dream, joining the refugee team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. More than a tale of survival, Les Nageuses celebrates the resilience, dignity and courage of refugees, taking a human and universal look at the migration crisis.
