Mourir en été - Novel / short story - Zsuzsa Bank - Rivages, 2022
Zsuzsa Bánk delivers a deeply intimate and universal tale of a last summer spent at the side of her dying father. As the illness accelerates and the end becomes imminent, it's not just a farewell that is being prepared, but the emergence of a whole shared life, made up of silences, tender gestures, contained pain and light. The author weaves a text of rare, moving intensity, in which the dead continue to speak, inviting themselves to the table, in everyday phrases, in inhabited silences. Evoking the emotional power of Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, this novel is a vibrant tribute to what remains when all else is gone.
