The kindness of strangers - Film - Lone Scherfig - 2019
In New York, Clara and her two little boys have left their hometown and marital home to escape the violence of her husband, a local policeman. She crosses paths with an exhausted nurse, a kind-hearted ex-convict and a drifting youth. These characters support each other to get better. The film delicately shows the consequences of domestic violence not only on the wife, but also on the two children, traumatized by what they have co-experienced. The link between addiction and trauma is also illustrated. But above all, the film is touching because it powerfully shows the mutual help and support that complete strangers can offer each other at the most difficult times in their lives. This solidarity enables each of the characters to navigate more smoothly and show greater resilience during traumatic events. A film filled with gentleness and hope, despite the difficulties encountered by the characters.
