John Rambo, a former member of the Special Forces during the Vietnam War, returns home when most of his brothers-in-arms are dead. As he travels through a small American town, he encounters the mistrust and rejection of his fellow countrymen. The ghosts of the war resurface, setting off a spiral of violence. First Blood, adapted from David Morrell's novel of the same name, is one of the first films to accurately portray certain psychotraumatic symptoms, such as flashbacks and neurovegetative hyper-reactivity. It also shows the feeling often described by trauma victims: the sensation of "no longer being part of the Community of Humankind".
